BABE VIBES is an interview series all about bad ass babes. Where I chat with millennial gals and guys who are (for the want of a better phrase) ‘killing it’ in their life, whatever that may look like. Intimate questions, career questions, silly and fun questions. We delve deep and get to the nitty gritty. My hope is to offer insights into worlds we may not otherwise see and connect like minded souls with their kin.
If a magical genie asked me to pick a handful of people I'd like to be friends with, and then he would grant me that wish, it would totally be Hannah. Behind her radiant smile which oozes those positive vibes she is a the boss gal of your dreams. Running a raw food business, Real Rad Food at the age of 22 she is nothing short of inspiring. I caught up with Hannah to talk all things from her journey into raw food to her thoughts on wellness. And I can tell you right now she is a pure delight. Also did I mention the food she makes is totally mouthwatering? Honestly, go for a scroll on her insta and you will see what I mean! Sweet treats that are beautiful and bright I'm sure it will have even the biggest naysayers begging for a taste. Let's see what she had to say.
For those of us who aren't familiar with our work - can you tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?
My name is Hannah. I am 22, live in Mount Manunganui and own a business called Real Rad Food. Real Rad Food specialises in fully raw sweet treats and custom made celebration cakes. We are Raw, Vegan, Refined Sugar Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free and Delicious. We are passionate about creating plant based foods that not only look and taste amazing, but are amazing for you.
We attend markets every week & stock over 7 cafes Tauranga & the Waikato region. We also have an online store in which we send our products nationwide.
How did you get into raw food?
Instagram has played a huge part in the creation and success of Real Rad Food. I guess it all began when I started my plant based instagram page about three years ago - Sharing recipe ideas, images of my raw treat creations and just chatting about my health journey. I quickly realised that I was super passionate about this way of living and wanted to share how DELICIOUS I thought my food was. I began making a few raw cakes for people here & there. This then lead to me deciding to take the next step and devote all of my time to growing it.
What was the biggest motivation for you to take your hobby to you full time gig?
After being so active on social media, I knew the gap and demand in the market was there so I took it. I started chatting to cafe owners about wholesale and signed up for nearly every market I could get into. Here I am 7 months later, with a thriving business that isn’t even one year old.
I have a tremendous amount of love for the social platform and owe a lot to it. Hence, why I take such great pride in producing quality content. It isn’t just to promote Real Rad Food. But its to give back to the platform and to the community who inspired me in the beginning.
Any tips for someone wanting to do the same?
Quality, consisted & authentic content is absolutely paramount when marketing your business online. Be you, share your journey and give back to the online community that supports your business.
Enjoy what you’re doing and keep it as a hobby for as long as possible. Take opportunities and say YES to everything in the beginning. Passion & determination are key - You have to be able to hustle hard & roll with the punches.
Let's talk a little bit about success. How do you define success? And do you think you’ve got it?
I feel like success isn’t a moment in time, but a journey. To me, this feeling of success means being able to do what I love, be financially stable & have a balanced lifestyle where I get to spend time with friends and family. Im not quite there with the ‘balanced lifestyle’ (kind of a work-aholic / am obsessed with my business) but I will get there!
What is the biggest thing you’ve learnt from owning your own business?
What tax & GST is hahaha
Did you ever see ‘REAL RAD FOOD’ as your future? How does it compare to where you thought you would be?
I was so lost when I came out of University two years ago. I studied geography & education and guessed that I would just become a teacher or something along those lines. I really only went to university because I didn’t know what else to do (don’t do this lol). I quickly realised that I was actually super lucky to have this passion going on in the background. I also had the ability to do whatever I wanted after my degree & thought I would give it a shot. It was a now or never type thing really. Never looked back or put much thought into what else I would be doing instead!
When you're not making delicious treats what are you up to?
Yoga & eating smashed avo & drinking coffee at my favourite cafes.
Do you have a morning routine to set you up for a good day?
I am a real morning person - I always work out first thing (interval training or yoga).
Come home, shower.
Head to the kitchen & get a coffee on the way. Then I sip away & answer emails while planning the days production for the kitchen.
If you were a fruit or vegetable, what would you be?
Hmm, a watermelon - Refreshing & fulfilling?? hahaha
What do you most like about yourself?
I am a really hard worker & am super determined when I put my mind to things that I am passionate about.
Where does your inspiration come from?
OOOH, Taline's book is totally on my to read list. Looks gorgeous.
What does a typical work day look like for you?
These days, it is mostly a 5.30am alarm then a 6am gym class. Im at the kitchen by 7.30am & there until about 5pm. This is when I am making cakes, rolling Raw Balls, sending our packages for freight and doing local deliveries. There are also a fair few meeting thrown in there too. Then I will try get to a yoga class, head home for dinner & settle in for Married At First Sight (obsessed).
What does your ideal day off look like?
Sleep ins, beach walks, coffee, being by the ocean. Family & friends.
What are you afraid of?
Cockroaches & mice. Never affording a house due to love for smashed avo.
I can relate to alllll of those ha. We do love our smashed avo right?!
How would your friends describe you?
Bubbly, hard working, loyal.
If you were to host a dinner party who would you invite?
My friends & family. Quality time with them is so so important and something I wish I could have more of.
What is your thoughts on wellness and how to you incorporate it into your daily routine?
This is so important to me! Firstly, yoga, yoga yoga! Can't get enough. I try to practice everyday and it keeps me mentally and physically fit. Its such a nice and relaxing way to escape the day and give an over active mind a rest. I also love to let my competitive side shine and regularly go to F45 Tauranga. I am an active personal and will always make time for moving my body no matter how busy I get. In saying that, I do listen to my body and rest when it needs it. A walk up the mount happens nearly every second day. Gosh, I am lucky to live here.
I eat a plant based diet and have an almond flat white everyday (essential). I believe in a balanced diet and think its important to look after your insides - After all, health is wealth. My diet & exercise play a huge part in my mental clarity.
I surround myself with people who inspire me, encourage me and love me unconditionally. I say no to stuff that I don’t want to do and don’t feel guilty about it.
I educate myself on being more in tune with my spirituality and thoughts. I try to be present in life moments and make sure to give myself time to relax and recharge.
This is so inspiring, you've no idea! Let’s talk about self care; what is your go to when you need some extra quality time?
Yoga & mediation. It allows me to slow down, rest my mind & focus on my breath for even just an hour at a time.
What is something nice you do for yourself (Or would like to do more of) when you’re feeling a bit off?
Thai massages. I had my first ever massage a month ago & I am so obsessed! Its a real treat but after a hard week it does wonders for my mental & physical wellbeing.
What is your secret to your gorgeous smile?
A genuine happiness & joy for my life - the people in it and the love they give.
Tell us about a moment in your week where you felt on top of the world
Really positive feedback on a wedding cake we sent via frozen freight to Hamilton. Its always pretty special to be apart of peoples special day, & for RRF to be servicing wider areas in the Waikato is also really cool!
That is sooooo special and exciting. CONGRATULATIONS. I'm so proud of you to see your business flourishing.
Whats the best piece of advice you've received?
Make sure you not only have passion but you also have determination. Because after falling on your face over and over again (this happens A LOT in business) passion will quickly fade, its determination that will pick you back up.
Can you tell us whats in store this year for yourself and real rad food?
This year is totally committed to growing Real Rad Food in the areas that we have already penetrated - Wholesale, Markets & private/online order. There is so much more we can do in those three avenues and I'm super excited to explore them more. I am personally really focused on growing the business but am super keen to get a week or so off in winter & get down to the snow! This year is about cementing the foundation and setting roots in this great place I call home - Mount Maunganui. Stay tuned ;)
Hannah! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your journey with us. I know I for one am feeling totally inspired. Having had followed you pre-REAL RAD FOOD days I'm so proud and exciting to see how far you and RRF has come in this short span. I can not wait to see what the future holds. Thank you for all the positive vibes, it has totally got me buzzing xx
Be sure to check out Hannah and if you're in NZ you can totally go by her online store and pick something up!
