Ash Owens

BABE VIBES is an interview series all about bad ass babes. Where I chat with millennial gals and guys who are (for the want of a better phrase) ‘killing it’ in their life, whatever that may look like. Intimate questions, career questions, silly and fun questions. We delve deep and get to the nitty gritty. My hope is to offer insights into worlds we may not otherwise see and connect like minded souls with their kin.

When I was putting this post together I couldn't help but feel inspired and excited. It is like all her good vibes radiated out on me. Are you ready for that too? HAHA. I think the first place I stumbled into Ash's work was through Miss FQ, where she won the Up & Comer award. After reading her bio (which went a little like this: "Committed to “influencing positively”, Ash is always on the money when it comes to what should be on our radar, but rather than just pushing product, she sees her rising social media status as an opportunity to influence others “to be good people, chase their dreams and be wholeheartedly true to themselves") I knew I had to check this girl out. So I did. And I wasn't disappointed. Rather I was given a healthy dose of positivity. I've been dying to share this with you so I am so beyond thrilled the time has come!! I'm rather excited to have Ash over on UW today, to share those good vibes with you and of course, so that we can get to know her that little bit more. So let's get into it!!!

Kicking it off with the most important life question: What is your spirit animal?

Omg this is such a good one haha! Definitely Spongebob lol I am literally Spongebob in human form.

B: HA! I love that you are spongebob! Best I've heard!

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do.

So my full name is actually Ashleigh but I branded myself as Ash so nobody actually knows this which I find quite humorous! I am a full time self employed blogger and social media influencer.

What is the message you want to spread through your blog?

The number one message that I am constantly trying to spread through my blog is that it's okay to be yourself, it's okay to be imperfect, it's good to laugh and maintain a sense of humour when shit hits the fan in life but that it's always important to stay positive. That message definitely translates through all of my posts from fashion, to beauty, to of course more lifestyle topics!

Why did you decide to start a blog?

I went through a really crappy break up and pretty much spent all of my time post-breakup reading blogs and watching YouTubers to help make me feel better. I also learnt a lot about skincare and makeup at this time, while I have always had an interest in fashion so naturally after reading so much and learning so much I wanted to start my own to share all of my new found knowledge! Plus I also really needed a creative hobby because at the time I was at uni and my degree was super boring and academic.

B: Its funny how most of the time great things are born out of chaos. I'm sure there is some quote about it but it escapes me. --- The best thing about the internet is I can google search for it. GOT IT - "I think that we are like stars. Something happens to burst us open; but when we burst open and think we are dying; we’re actually turning into a supernova. And then when we look at ourselves again, we see that we’re suddenly more beautiful than we ever were before! - C. Joybell C" This quote always makes me feel good when I'm in a tough spot.

Can you tell us about your journey to taking your blog full time?

At the end of 2017, I finished up my degree and by this point had been blogging for nearly two years. I had just hit 10K followers on Instagram (major milestone for a micro influencer!) and signed on with my talent agency. Quite quickly I was being approached by all of my favourite fashion, beauty and tech brands who were interested in working with me in a commercial capacity which excited me because from day one I was only ever interested in taking on paid work with brands that I genuinely loved. As these opportunities started flowing in at a rate where I felt like I could go full time with the blog and Instagram, I decided to just do it and it's the best decision I have ever made in my entire life. After graduating in December, everyone I went to Uni with was hustling to find their first job, and I literally had 0 interest. My only passion in life is writing and creating, plus I had this burning drive to only work for myself! So here we are :)

Any tips for gals wanting to do the same?

Work hard, be consistent, don't expect to grow over night - it takes years! Always be honest, always be yourself, always have something juicy to write about and a point of difference to your content, otherwise you're "just another blogger/influencer".

How do you deal with negativity both online and IRL?

I mostly just remind myself that I am a good person, the reason I am doing this is because I want to help my followers and be someone who they can turn to no matter what, which they know because I am literally in DM convo with so many of them on the daily and I just think that those relationships I have created are absolutely priceless. If I can make someone feel better about their breakup by sharing my experiences or, heres an example, I posted a photo of my skin with no makeup a year ago when I had quite severe acne and then showed how great my skin was looking now, it honestly made my heart so happy reading all of the responses from the girls who felt hopeless about their acne until they saw what my skin used to be like, and thanked me for sharing. Things like that make me forget that haters even exist. Sorry I just went on a bit of a tangent but I really just remind myself of the positivity that I create whenever I hear or see a nasty comment!

What is your favourite thing + biggest blessing about being a full time blogger?

I think the best thing about being a full time blogger is the fact that you can work productively for the correct amount of hours. In the media industry, people are literally working 60 hour weeks and I just think that is so unhealthy! Considering that we are in a creative industry, you physically cannot be in beast working mode 100% of that time. I love that if I wake up feeling uninspired, I can just go for a walk, go to the gym, listen to a podcast or read a book for a few hours until the creative juices start flowing and then I can beast work mode for 5 hours straight in the afternoon, and that's my work day instead of 8 hours where half the time you're slacking off!

What is the hardest thing that no one really talks about?

It's a no brainier: self comparison. I think people are starting to talk about it more which is great (I've touched on it a couple of times on the blog) but it really is one of those things that can be so difficult to overcome. Another hard thing I am trying to deal with is the new bloody Instagram Algorithm!

Where does your inspiration come from?

Quite literally anywhere and anyone. Blog post ideas spark up in my head at the strangest times! Mid conversation with someone I just met or during a before bed time chit chat with my boyfriend. I look for visual inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram and sometimes even just head to the mall and wander the shops if I need some style inspo

When you are stuck in a rut, what do you do to get out of it?

I go offline. Honestly, staying away from the online world for a weekend or for 24 hours is the BEST. It always fixes me!

What does a typical day look like for you?

I wake up around 7.30ish, make myself a Nespresso and do emails in bed. Then I might check YouTube & BlogLovin to see what my favourite creators have uploaded overnight (most of them are London based) and read a blog post or watch a YouTube video until 8 AM. Then I'll have a shower, get ready for the day, maybe head to an event in the morning or start planning/writing a new blog post. I tend to shoot visual content in the afternoons so I'll have some lunch, make sure my camera is charged and then shoot for an hour or two, respond to the emails that I've recieved throughout the day at around 4 PM and then finish up anything on my to-do list until 5.30 ish. Sometimes I'll work until 6.30 when Liam gets home from work! I also quite often have evening events so I might head out to an event at 4 pm and be home around 7.30 ish.

What does an ideal day off look like?

Liam and I will sleep in until 9, then we'll head out for breakfast and get poached eggs and avo on toast. Then we'd go out on Liam's dad's boat with our friends and go snorkelling around Waiheke!

If you could go on holiday right now, where would you go?

The Maldives

What is in your shopping cart right now?

Some cute summery clothes for our Bali trip in 7 weeks!

If you could have dinner with three people (dead or alive) who would they be?

Omg this is so hard! Zoe Sugg, Jennifer Lawrence and Oprah. Can you imagine the chats!!!

How would your friends describe you?

Caring, generous, embarrassingly loud

What is your thoughts on wellness and how to you incorporate it into your daily routine?

Wellness is definitely something that I am learning to focus on the more I get older. I suffer from anxiety on the daily so making sure that my mind is being looked after is so important to me! This means steering clear from as much caffeine as I can because it triggers my anxiety, going to the gym and doing Yoga a couple of times a week! In my daily routine, it means that I take time to do something for myself every single day whether that's a hour of reading, an hour to do a face mask, a couple of hours away from Instagram and emails. It's just making sure that I am prioritising things that keep me feeling relaxed and happy!

IMG_9949-1003x1254@2x copy.jpg

Self-care wise, what is your first go to when you need some extra self love?

Always a face mask at home or I'll head to the salon for a mani-pedi!

What is the best piece of advice you've received?

You never gain anything by worrying

Tell us about a moment in your week where you felt on top of the world

What a cute question! I love this! Last week I got a call from Lancome and they asked if I would like to be one of their key ambassadors for 2018 and I literally couldn't have felt happier in that moment in time! I LOVE and respect the brand so much, so it really made me feel on top of the world in terms of my career. As cheesy as it sounds, Liam literally makes me feel on top of the world every single day, I quite literally couldn't ask for a more amazing, supportive and loving boyf :)

B: ahhh!!! You answer is literally the best. I'm so happy for YOU!! Eeep!

What are you most excited about in the coming six months?

Our trip to Bali! We're also going to Queenstown for 5 nights in July. I have a the travel bug so I am super focused on our trips.

B: That is totally something to be excited about! BALI!! WOO

Whats on the cards for the blog and yourself in 2018?

You'll have to wait and see ;) there is a lot to be excited about, that's for sure!
