Chloe Summer

BABE VIBES is a bi-weekly interview series all about bad ass babes. Where I chat with millennial gals and guys who are (for the want of a better phrase) ‘killing it’ in their respective fields. Intimate questions, career questions, silly and fun questions. We delve deep and get to the nitty gritty. My hope is to offer insights into worlds we may not otherwise see and connect like minded souls with their kin.

If you watch my videos you know I'm a fan of this stunning red-head. From her cool and clever videos to sheer idea that she wore her wedding dress on 'adventures', she is just the ultimate babe. I knew I had to get her for a chat. Today we are talking with Chloe, from the youtube channel Catguts.

As per usual lets start with the deepest and most hard hitting question. What is your spirit animal?

A lucky cat :’)

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do.

I'm Chloe :) I'm from Brisbane, Australia. I work in the death care industry as an undertaker and funeral coordinator, and in a video game store on the side. I also make Youtube videos! Yay.

Why did you start making youtube videos?

I had always wanted to be a part of Youtube scene since about 2010, so I started making videos around then. I have had several channels over the years but catguts is where I really found my place.

And how did you get your channel name? Spill the beans.

It was originally a screenplay I wrote (the vision for her (catguts) was like a stoker/coralline hybrid. Anyway, I got really invested in her story and based a lot of her character off of myself. Then down the track I used it as my roller derby name!! Then it gradually became my internet persona/handle.

How did you find your youtube voice?

Lots of trial and error! I've had something like four previous channels where I did everything from collabs to 45 minute one take videos of me reading a novel (still not sure what possessed me to do this??) I think when I stopped trying to cater to the styles of other creators was when I was able to start creating as my authentic self.

What is the main message you try to convey through your videos?

I would love to have an insightful answer to this question, but I don't! I just make whatever comes to mind, which is probably why my channel is so very random. If anything, I guess the message is to create for yourself before anyone else.

How do you maintain balancing 'normal life' with making videos?

Making videos has always been just for fun and I've never been super serious about it so I don't keep to much of a schedule. I just make things when I have ideas/time and I think that's a lot more fulfilling and keeps my content genuine.

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration for creating content comes from consuming it - I fill my world with so many channels and illustrators’ and filmmakers' works and I can draw ideas out of the most random everyday situations as well.

When you are stuck in a rut, what do you do to get out of it? What advice would you give someone who is in a creative rut?

When I'm stuck in a rut I usually flail wildly and eat my feelings until I've resurfaced. Again, I just consume HUGE amounts of other people's works and analyse the elements I really admire and try and build from there. I also have multiple journals and notepads that have half-thoughts scribbled down on them, so if I'm feeling brave I'll dive into one of those and try to decode some old ideas.

My advice would be to not try and force creativity, it will come back to you in its own time.

When you're not making videos what are you up to?

My daily life is pretty standard. I’ve got a lot of goals that require a lot of $$$ (home renovations, upcoming Japan trips etc) so this whole year has just been about knuckling down and working hard. I’m basically always at work, working out or sleeping. Sorry for being so boring!

What is one of your goals for 2017?

For me, this year is really about getting in a good place financially and physically. My main goal is improving my overall health and wellbeing. I’m in the process of learning to ingrain new rituals and routine into my daily life that I hope will stick long term.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A weekday is usually gym, work, sleep. On a weekend day it’s those three things plus eating lots of Japanese BBQ.

What keeps you up at night?

Having random video ideas that come to me right before I fall asleep!

Whats the best piece of advice you've received?

You’ve always gotta be your own number one.

When you have a dream, how do you make it a reality?

Be analytical, work hard and don’t be scared to ask for help.

Tell us about a moment in your week where you felt on top of the world, and the boss of your own life; a babe vibe moment?

Smashing out a really tough workout - the feeling you get when you’ve pushed past a PB and really energised your body can carry you through the whole day !

If you were an item of clothing (personality wise) what would you be?

A vintage cape with pockets and buckles (aesthetic but functional?) haha.

You can find Chloe here on her youtube or on insta. I've been a big time fan of hers since I stumbled into her corner of the internet. She never ceases to amaze me with the creativity that goes into her videos. Plus she is just a cool human in my books! Thanks so much Chloe for taking part!
